Details

The Neo-Assyrian Empire dominated the ancient Near East from the tenth to the late seventh century BC. Centered in northern Mesopotamia, it developed a highly organized government and one of antiquity’s most formidable armies. Assyria expanded through conquest, tribute, deportation, and provincial administration, with its overwhelming military power discouraging rebellion.

Assyria increasingly threatened Israel and Judah during the ninth and eighth centuries BC. Ahab fought Assyria at Qarqar in 853 BC, while Jehu later paid tribute to Shalmaneser III. Under Tiglath-pileser III, Assyrian domination intensified: Israel lost territory, Damascus was conquered, and Judah became an Assyrian vassal. Samaria fell in 722/721 BC, ending the northern kingdom of Israel and resulting in significant population deportations.

Judah survived but remained under Assyrian pressure. In 701 BC Sennacherib devastated much of Judah after Hezekiah rebelled, although Jerusalem survived. Assyria therefore became an important historical backdrop for prophets such as Isaiah, Hosea, Micah, and Nahum.
