Born in Copenhagen, Bloch studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Wilhelm Marstrand. His early work included portraits and scenes of everyday life. A period of study and travel in Italy between 1859 and 1866 helped shape his mature approach to historical painting.
Bloch achieved international recognition for his religious subjects. He received a commission to produce 23 paintings illustrating the life of Christ for Frederiksborg Palace Chapel in Denmark. Completed over approximately fourteen years, these works became among his most celebrated achievements.
He also produced altarpieces, drawings, and etchings. Bloch died in Copenhagen in 1890, leaving an artistic legacy that continues to influence Christian devotional imagery.
