In Scripture, holiness is first and foremost a description of God Himself. God is not merely holy among other things—He is uniquely and perfectly holy. The Bible emphasizes this in striking language: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:3), highlighting His absolute purity and transcendence. God’s holiness means that He is completely free from sin and utterly distinct from all creation .

Because God is holy, He calls His people to reflect His character. This call is repeated throughout both the Old and New Testaments: “Be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 19:2; 1 Peter 1:15–16). Holiness, therefore, is not only an attribute of God but also a calling for His people. It involves being set apart from sin and dedicated to God in both life and conduct .

In the Old Testament, holiness is expressed through separation and consecration. Certain people, such as priests, along with places like the tabernacle and temple, were set apart for God’s purposes. Even objects and times, such as the Sabbath, were designated as holy. These distinctions emphasized that God’s presence is sacred and must be approached with reverence (Exodus 3:5; Leviticus 16). Holiness also extended beyond ritual into moral life, calling for justice, compassion, and righteousness (Leviticus 19) .

In the New Testament, holiness becomes more deeply internalized. Through Jesus Christ, believers are made holy in their standing before God and are called to grow in holiness in their daily lives. This process, often called sanctification, involves transformation through the work of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 10:10; Galatians 5:16). Holiness is therefore not merely external behavior, but a life shaped by relationship with God.

Holiness in the Christian life is both a position and a practice. Believers are set apart as God’s people, and they are called to live in a way that reflects His character. This includes turning away from sin, renewing the mind, and offering one’s life to God (Romans 12:1–2). To live in holiness is to live in a way that reflects God’s glory rather than conforming to the world .

At its deepest level, holiness is about alignment with God Himself. It involves loving what He loves and rejecting what He rejects, resulting in a life shaped by His will. It is not merely outward behavior but an inward transformation in which a person comes to share in God’s character .

In summary, holiness in the Bible is the quality of being set apart for God and reflecting His perfect character. It originates in God Himself, is revealed throughout Scripture, and is imparted to His people through Christ. Holiness stands at the heart of the biblical message, calling believers into a life that is distinct, pure, and devoted to God.
