Azur, or Azzur, is the name of several men. One was the father of Hananiah the false prophet; another was the father of Jaazaniah; and another was among those who sealed the covenant with the Lord after the return from Babylon. The name means “helper.”
The bearers appear in the accounts of Jeremiah’s conflict with Hananiah, the princes associated with Ezekiel’s message, and the postexilic covenant community.
The name is associated with the postexilic return from Babylon and with individuals in the periods of Jeremiah and Ezekiel.
