Hammon
The name of two places: a town on the boundary of Asher near the coast, and a Levitical city in Naphtali. The latter is identified with Hammath and its warm springs near Tiberias.
Definition
Hammon was the name of two places. One was a town on Asher’s seaward boundary near Zidon; the other was a Levitical city in Naphtali, probably identical with Hammath and Hammoth-dor.
Biblical Usage
The Asherite Hammon is listed among the towns on the tribe’s seaward frontier. The Naphtali Hammon was given to the Gershonite Levites.
Historical Background
The Asherite site has been associated with Umm el-Amud or the mouth of Wady Chamul near Tyre. It was associated with the worship of Baal-Chamman. The Naphtali site was identified with the hot springs near Tiberias.

<p>ham'-on (chammon, "glowing"):</p><p>(1) A place on the seaward frontier of Asher, named with Rehob and Kanah (Jos 19:28), to be sought, therefore, not far from Tyre. The most probable identification so far suggested is with Umm el'Amud, "mother of the column" (or `Awamid, "columns"), at the mouth of Wady Chamul, on the shore, about 10 miles South of Tyre. An inscription found by Renan shows that the place was associated with the worship of Ba`al Chamman (CIS, I, 8).</p><p>(2) A city in Naphtali, given to the Gershonite Levites (1Ch 6:76). It is identical with Hammath (Jos 19:35), and probably also with Hammoth-dor (Jos 21:32).</p><p>W. Ewing</p>
