IMALCUE
Imalkue was an Arabian prince entrusted with the upbringing of the young Antiochus. He was persuaded to support the boy’s claim during the political struggles recorded in 1 Maccabees.
Definition
Imalcue was an Arabian prince entrusted by Alexander Balas with the upbringing of his young son Antiochus. He was later persuaded by Tryphon to support the young Antiochus against Demetrius.
Biblical Usage
The events are recorded in 1 Maccabees 11:39-40. After Antiochus was set up, he confirmed Jonathan in the high-priesthood and appointed him among the king’s friends.
Historical Background
Josephus gives the name as Malchus. Imalcue’s role belonged to the political struggles involving Alexander Balas, Antiochus VI, Demetrius, and Tryphon.

<p>i-mal-ku'-e (Imalkoue; the King James Version Simalcue): An Arabian prince to whom Alexander Balas entrusted the upbringing of his young son Antiochus. Tryphon, who had formerly been on the side of Alexander, persuaded Imalcue to set up the young Antiochus (Antiochus VI) against Demetrius, who had incurred the enmity of his men of war (1 Macc 11:39,40). Antiochus confirmed Jonathan in the high-priesthood and appointed him to be one of the king's friends (11:57). In Josephus (Ant., XIII, v, 1) the name is given as Malchus.</p><p>J. Hutchison</p>
