Ithai, also called Ittai, was a Benjamite warrior in David’s guard. The name may refer to another form of Ittai.

Definition

Ithai, also called Ittai, is the name of two men associated with David. One was a Benjamite from Gibeah and one of David’s heroes. The other was a Gittite from Gath and a leading commander among David’s followers.

Biblical Usage

The Gittite Ittai remained loyal to David during Absalom’s rebellion, refusing to return to Jerusalem and share the new king’s service. David later appointed him a chief captain alongside Joab and Abishai.

Historical Background

The Benjamite Ithai served in David’s guard about 1046 B.C. The Gittite appears to have recently left Gath and joined David’s army out of personal loyalty.
