ROOT OF JESSE
The Root of Jesse is a Messianic title referring to the promised king from Jesse’s family, the father of David. The New Testament identifies Jesus as this descendant and hope of the nations.
Definition
The Root of Jesse is a Messianic title meaning a descendant or branch of Jesse’s family. Jesse was the father of David, and the promised king was to come from this family line. The title therefore identifies the Messiah with the stock of Jesse and David.
Biblical Usage
Isaiah speaks of the Root of Jesse, and Paul quotes that passage in Romans 15:12. Jesus is identified as a branch or descendant of Jesse as well as of David.

<p>(shoresh yishay (Isa 11:10); rhiza tou Iessai (Ro 15:12)): The Hebrew and Greek words are practically the same in meaning. "Root" means descendant, branch of the family or stock. The Messianic king was to be of the family of Jesse the father of David. In Ro 15:12 Paul quotes the Septuagint of Isa 11:10.
