ALEXANDER BALAS
Alexander Balas seized the Syrian throne during a civil conflict and gained Maccabean support by appointing Jonathan high priest. His reign helped strengthen the political position of the Maccabean family.
Biblical Usage
Alexander sought Jonathan’s support and appointed him high priest, sending a purple robe and diadem. Jonathan’s appointment strengthened the Maccabean position and made him the legal head of Judea.
