Amaziah
Amaziah was a king of Judah who defeated Edom but later worshiped Edomite gods and was defeated by Israel. The name was also borne by a Levite, a priest at Bethel, and a Simeonite chief.
Biblical Usage
Amaziah’s reign illustrates obedience followed by apostasy and judgment. He obeyed the prophetic command to dismiss Israelite mercenaries and gained victory over Edom, but later worshiped its gods. His challenge to Israel brought defeat upon Judah. The priest Amaziah opposed Amos at Bethel.
