Anointing
Anointing may refer to the ordinary use of oil for personal care, hospitality, healing, or burial, or to religious consecration. In Scripture, anointing persons or sacred objects signifies dedication, and the Messiah is anointed by the Holy Spirit.
Biblical Usage
Kings and high priests were anointed, and the rite was associated with holiness and the endowment of the Spirit of Yahweh. The title “the Lord’s anointed” became a designation for the king and, through the Greek Christos, for the Messiah. Anointing the sick with oil is also mentioned.
