Ashes
Ashes were used in Israel as a sign of mourning, grief, humiliation, and repentance. The ashes of the burned red heifer were also used ceremonially in purification from uncleanness.
Biblical Usage
Ashes placed on the head or used in sitting and mourning expressed grief, humiliation, or repentance. Figuratively, they represent vanity and insignificance. The ashes of the completely burned red heifer were used in the purification of the unclean.
