ASMONEANS
The Asmoneans, or Hasmoneans, were the priestly Maccabean family that led the Jewish revolt against Syrian oppression. They restored Jewish independence for a time, though later family rivalries and political conflicts weakened the nation.
Biblical Usage
Their history is recorded chiefly in the Books of the Maccabees and is connected with the defense of Israel’s religion, the capture and purification of Jerusalem, and the rededication of the temple.
