ASSAY
To assay means to attempt, try, or make an effort, often unsuccessfully. It may describe David trying Saul’s armor, Paul attempting to enter a region, or someone daring to perform a forbidden act.
Biblical Usage
David tried unsuccessfully to use Saul’s armor; Paul attempted, but was hindered, from entering Bithynia; and other passages describe attempts to profane the temple or accomplish difficult acts.
