An assessor is an assistant to a king or judge, and later a person who determines taxes or property assessments. Biblical officials responsible for tribute and Roman tax collection performed related administrative functions.
Biblical Usage
Israelite royal officials included an officer over tribute, apparently responsible for assessment and tax collection. In the Gospels, publicans collected taxes as agents under the Roman provincial system.
