Assyria
Assyria was the powerful kingdom centered east of the Tigris, with capitals including Ashur and Nineveh. It conquered and deported the northern kingdom of Israel and repeatedly threatened Judah before its eventual fall.
Biblical Usage
Assyria repeatedly appears as an enemy and instrument of judgment against Israel and Judah. It imposed tribute, conquered Damascus and Samaria, carried the northern kingdom of Israel into captivity, invaded Judah, and threatened Jerusalem. Its power ultimately declined and the kingdom fell before the Babylonians and Medes.
