Atonement
Atonement is the reconciliation of sinners to God through the sacrificial and obedient work of Jesus Christ. It fulfills the biblical pattern of sin being covered and guilt removed, restoring fellowship between God and those who trust him.
Biblical Usage
The Old Testament uses atonement for satisfaction, propitiation, the covering of sin, and reconciliation. The New Testament presents Christ’s death and mediatorial work as the ground of reconciliation. Saving atonement is not the cause of God’s love but the provision through which his love is consistently extended to sinners.
