Beard

Jewish Life & Customs • Old Testament
The beard was an important sign of dignity among ancient Israelites and other western Semites. Shaving, plucking, neglecting, or cutting it could express mourning, disgrace, or humiliation.
Biblical Usage
Biblical narratives use the beard in acts of salutation, mourning, ceremonial treatment, and humiliation. David’s ambassadors suffered a serious insult when their beards were cut off. Ezekiel also uses the razor as an image of judgment against the guilty nation.
