Birthright
The birthright was the special inheritance and authority ordinarily belonging to the firstborn son, including a double portion and family leadership. It could be forfeited or transferred, as in the cases of Esau and Reuben.
Biblical Usage
Esau sold his birthright to Jacob, while Reuben lost his because of misconduct. The birthright is mentioned directly in the New Testament in connection with Esau, and the Old Testament idea helps illuminate references to Christ as the firstborn.
