Bread
Bread was the chief staple food of biblical peoples, commonly made from wheat or barley and baked as thin cakes. It was also used in offerings, including the showbread, and figuratively represents daily provision, sorrow, wickedness, fellowship, and God’s sustaining care.
Biblical Usage
Bread was used in offerings, including the twelve loaves of showbread presented hot each Sabbath and eaten by the priests after removal. Passover bread was unleavened. Figuratively, bread represents daily food, sorrow, tears, wickedness, deceit, and God’s provision. The daily-bread petition therefore concerns needed food generally.
