Children

Jewish Life & Customs • Both
Children were highly valued in biblical society, and offspring were commonly regarded as a blessing. Scripture also describes their birth, nursing, naming, circumcision, family authority, inheritance, and responsibilities within the household.
Biblical Usage
Scripture presents children within household, covenant, inheritance, and religious obligations. Sons normally received inheritance, with the eldest receiving a double portion; daughters inherited when there was no son and were to remain within the father’s tribe.
