Coins were used in the biblical world especially from the Persian period onward. Jewish coinage developed under the Maccabees, while Persian, Greek, Roman, Herodian, and other coins circulated in Palestine during later biblical and inter-testamental periods.
Biblical Usage
The Old Testament mentions Darics, called drams in the King James Version. The New Testament refers to such coins as Roman denarii and copper mites, while the coins of Herods and procurators were copper.
