Corban
Worship & Prayer • New Testament
Corban was a gift or offering devoted to God. Jesus condemned the misuse of this vow when religious tradition allowed people to dedicate possessions to the temple while refusing to use them to support their parents.
Biblical Usage
Jesus condemned the Pharisees’ use of Corban traditions because they allowed a person to avoid supporting his parents while claiming that his goods were dedicated to God. Such tradition annulled the spirit of the commandment to honor father and mother.
