CORPSE

Jewish Life & Customs • Both
A corpse is a dead human body. Under the Old Testament law, contact with a corpse brought ceremonial uncleanness, and leaving the dead unburied was regarded as a disgrace and calamity.
Biblical Usage
Priests were restricted from touching dead bodies, with stricter rules for the high priest and Nazirite. Purification from corpse defilement involved the ashes of a red heifer and associated materials. Bodies were not to remain overnight on a tree, and burial was considered important.
