COVENANT, BOOK OF THE
The Book of the Covenant is the collection of laws in Exodus 20–23 that formed the terms of Israel’s covenant with God at Sinai. It included regulations for worship, justice, property, mercy, festivals, and community life.
Biblical Usage
Moses mediated the covenant at Sinai. The people accepted its words and ordinances, and the covenant was ratified with sacrifice and blood. The laws express direct and spiritual worship, equitable justice, concern for the weak and poor, humane treatment of animals, purity, brotherhood, and joyful life.
