An earthquake is a shaking or convulsion of the ground. In Scripture earthquakes may display God’s power and presence, accompany judgment, or mark significant events such as Christ’s death, resurrection, and the release of Paul and Silas.
Biblical Usage
Earthquakes are mentioned at Sinai, in the days of Saul and Elijah, during the reign of Uzziah, at Christ’s death and resurrection, and when Paul and Silas were released at Philippi. They may signify God’s presence and power, judgment, Christ’s coming, or the end of the world.
