Ebal, Mount
Mount Ebal stood north of Shechem opposite Mount Gerizim. Under Joshua, Israel gathered there to hear the law, renew the covenant, and proclaim the curses associated with disobedience.
Biblical Usage
After Israel’s conquest of the central region, Joshua led the people to Mount Ebal and Gerizim. An altar of unhewn stones was erected, the law was written, and the blessings and curses were read with responses from the two divisions of the people.
