Biblical Usage
Parents were responsible for teaching children the law and the meaning of Israel’s religious observances. Priests and Levites instructed the people, while the prophets emphasized moral and religious reform. In New Testament times Jesus is presented as the preeminent teacher, and His disciples continued educational work.
