FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness is God’s gracious removal of guilt and estrangement through repentance and faith, grounded in Christ’s atoning work. Believers are likewise commanded to release offenses and maintain a forgiving spirit toward others.
Biblical Usage
God’s forgiveness removes sin, restores favor, brings peace, and changes mistrust into trust. Christ teaches His disciples to forgive without limit and to maintain a forgiving spirit even before an offender repents, while repentance is required for full restoration. Forgiveness is also associated with the proclamation of the gospel, baptism, justification, and the atoning work of Christ.
