Fox
The fox, and possibly the jackal in some Old Testament passages, was a common wild animal of the region. Scripture associates it with ruined places, damage to vineyards, cunning, and the smallness of Herod’s apparent power.
Biblical Usage
Foxes or jackals appear in images of ruined places, damaged vineyards, and carrion. Jesus compared Herod to a fox and contrasted the animals’ holes with the Son of Man’s lack of a place to lay His head. The fox or jackal also appears in Samson’s burning of the Philistines’ fields.
