Gadara
Places & Geography • New Testament
Gadara was a fortified city southeast of the Sea of Galilee and a principal city of the surrounding region. The Gospel account of the demoniac or demoniacs is associated with the country of the Gadarenes.
Biblical Usage
The Gospels refer to the “country of the Gadarenes” in the account of Jesus’ healing of the demoniac or demoniacs. The wording designates the wider territory governed by Gadara rather than necessarily the city itself, which was separated from the lake by a deep ravine.
