A gate was an entrance to a city, palace, temple, camp, prison, or other enclosed place. City gates were also important centers for commerce, public assemblies, judgment, and the proclamation of messages.
Biblical Usage
Gates frequently provide the setting for judgment, public proclamation, prophecy, punishment, and worship. “The gates of Hades” may refer to the power of death or to the forces opposing Christ’s Church.
