Genealogy
Genealogy is the tracing or recording of descent and family relationships. Biblical genealogies establish tribal and family identity, inheritance, priestly and royal succession, and the promised line leading to the Messiah.
Biblical Usage
Genealogies establish identity and inheritance, organize tribes and families, preserve priestly and royal succession, and support the promised line of the Messiah. They were used in censuses, the organization of priests and Levites, the settlement of returning exiles, and the genealogies of Jesus. Biblical terms may also include broader relationships such as adoption, official connection, or descent through omitted generations.
