Gibeon
Gibeon was a major Hivite city in Benjamin whose inhabitants secured a covenant with Joshua by deception. It later became a Levitical and priestly center, where the tabernacle stood and Solomon offered sacrifices.
Biblical Usage
The Gibeonites secured a covenant with Joshua by deception, and the oath spared their lives while assigning them service as hewers of wood and drawers of water for the sanctuary. Joshua defeated the confederate kings who attacked Gibeon. The tabernacle stood there for years, and Solomon offered sacrifices there and received a memorable dream. Gibeon was also the scene of battles involving Abner and Joab and of Joab’s murder of Amasa.
