Gilgal
Gilgal was the name of several places in Israel. The best-known was Israel’s first camp west of the Jordan, where the people were circumcised, kept Passover, and set up memorial stones; another Gilgal was associated with Samuel and the prophets.
Biblical Usage
At the first Gilgal, Israel set up twelve memorial stones, was circumcised, kept the Passover, and saw the manna cease. It served as a headquarters during the conquest and later as a place where Saul was crowned and rejected. In the prophets’ day it became associated with idolatrous worship.
