Hormah was a city in southern Canaan whose name means “devoted to destruction” or “under the ban.” It was associated with Israel’s defeat and later conquest of the Canaanites, and was also called Zephath.
Biblical Usage
After the spies’ evil report, Israelites were defeated by the Amalekites and Canaanites as far as Hormah. Later Israel vowed to devote the Canaanite cities to destruction and called the place Hormah. Joshua and the tribes of Judah and Simeon finally subdued it; David later sent spoil there.
