People & Groups • New Testament
John is a name meaning “Jehovah’s gift.” In the New Testament it may refer to John Mark, a priestly official, or especially John the apostle, son of Zebedee and brother of James.
Biblical Usage
John the apostle was one of Jesus’ closest disciples, witnessed the Transfiguration, followed Jesus to the crucifixion, saw the empty tomb, and remained associated with Peter in the early church. He was known as the disciple whom Jesus loved and as one of the “sons of thunder.” John Mark appears in Acts, while another John belonged to the high-priestly kindred.
