Judah, Tribe of
People & Groups • Old Testament
The Tribe of Judah descended from Jacob’s son Judah and received a large inheritance south and west of Jerusalem. It included hill country, lowlands, wilderness, and cities assigned to the priests.
Biblical Usage
Judah increased greatly from the time of the descent into Egypt to the Exodus. It marched at the front of Israel’s wilderness camp, under a standard thought to bear a lion’s whelp. Caleb represented the tribe among the spies and later received its inheritance. Judah’s territory and cities are described in Joshua, including the priestly cities.
