Judas Iscariot
People & Groups • New Testament
Judas Iscariot was one of the Twelve Apostles who betrayed Jesus for money. After Jesus was condemned, Judas expressed remorse, returned the silver, and died in despair.
Biblical Usage
Judas was chosen among the Twelve, although Jesus knew from the beginning who would betray Him. He objected to the costly ointment used for Jesus, not because he cared for the poor, but because he controlled the money. He arranged Jesus’ arrest and identified Him with a kiss. After Jesus’ condemnation, Judas returned the silver, then hanged himself; Acts also records his falling headlong and being broken apart.
