A judge in Israel was a ruler or deliverer who administered justice and often rescued the people from oppression. Biblical judges served before the monarchy, while Scripture also describes judges in family, tribal, royal, and Roman settings.
Biblical Usage
Judges were expected to administer impartial justice, refusing bribes, popular pressure, and favoritism toward rich or poor. Their authority could extend over particular tribes or regions. Scripture also describes judicial proceedings involving witnesses, public hearings, divine guidance, and appeals to established courts or rulers.
