King

Government & Society • Both
A king is a chief ruler invested with authority over a people or land. Scripture uses the title for earthly rulers, for God as Israel’s true King, and for Christ as the promised and reigning King.
Biblical Usage
God is the true King of Israel and the sovereign ruler of the universe; Christ is King and the Son of God. Israel later demanded an earthly king like the surrounding nations, but Israel’s kings served as representatives of Jehovah under prescribed limits. Scripture also uses “king” figuratively for death as the king of terrors.
