A lieutenant was a governor or viceroy of a province in the Persian Empire, exercising both civil and military authority. The Revised Version uses satrap.
Biblical Usage
The title occurs in the Authorized Version in Esther 3:12; 8:9; 9:3 and Ezra 8:36.
