Nazarite
A Nazarite, more properly a Nazirite, was an Israelite separated by vow for devoted service to God. The vow required abstinence from wine, uncut hair, and avoidance of contact with the dead, followed by prescribed offerings.
Biblical Usage
The regulations for the vow are given in Numbers 6. The vow symbolized a life separated from sin and devoted to God. Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist are identified as Nazarites for life, while Paul is described as undertaking the vow on particular occasions.
