Neck
The neck is used literally for the body part and figuratively for strength, subjection, labor, obstinacy, danger, or sacrifice. To place a foot on an enemy’s neck signified conquest, while laying down one’s neck meant risking one’s life.
Biblical Usage
The yoke upon the neck represents labor, hardship, or subjection, while breaking or removing it expresses regained liberty. A conqueror’s foot on an enemy’s neck signifies victory. Scripture also speaks of stiff or hardened necks for obstinate rebellion, and of laying down the neck for another’s life.
