Oath
Obadiah, meaning “servant of the LORD,” was the name of several Israelites, including Ahab’s faithful steward, various leaders, and the prophet who proclaimed judgment against Edom.
Biblical Usage
Oaths were used in legal proceedings, state affairs, agreements, and ordinary dealings. Scripture forbids false swearing and swearing by false gods. Christ’s teaching against swearing emphasizes that ordinary speech should be truthful and binding, while solemn oaths are shown as permissible in fitting circumstances.
