A palace was a royal residence, fortified house, official building, or large complex. In Scripture the term can also refer to the temple, a ruler’s court, or the Roman praetorium.
Biblical Usage
The term is applied to royal residences, fortresses, the temple, and the official residences of the high priest and Pilate. In Philippians, “palace” renders a term associated with the praetorian troops at Rome, among whom Paul’s imprisonment became known. The word may also refer to a court or judgment hall in the Gospel and Acts accounts.
