A pillar is an upright shaft used for support, remembrance, or worship. Scripture describes memorial pillars and the pillar of cloud and fire that manifested God’s presence with Israel, while idolatrous pillars were condemned.
Biblical Usage
Jacob and others set up memorial pillars, while idolatrous pillars were commanded to be broken down. The pillar of cloud and fire manifested God’s presence with Israel. The New Testament uses “pillar” figuratively for church leaders, the church as the ground of truth, and the overcoming believer.
