Prophet
A prophet is a spokesman for God who receives and declares His message. Prophets called people to faithfulness, corrected sin, proclaimed God’s purposes, and sometimes foretold future events; Jesus is the great Prophet of the Church.
Biblical Usage
Scripture applies the title broadly to people who bore God’s message, including patriarchs, Moses, Samuel, Miriam, Deborah, and the canonical prophets. Prophets spoke, taught, sang, and sometimes received visions. Jesus is presented as the great Prophet of the Church, while the New Testament church also had prophets who received new revelations, distinct from teachers who explained truths already revealed.
