A reed is a tall, flexible plant used for staffs, writing instruments, measuring rods, and other purposes. Scripture uses it as a picture of weakness and mentions a reed placed in Jesus’ hand during his mockery.

Scripture uses the reed as a picture of weakness and instability. A bruised reed represents one who is weak in grace. A reed was placed in Jesus’ hand during his mockery and was used to offer him vinegar. Reeds also served as measuring instruments and writing implements.
