RIB

Objects & Symbols • Old Testament
A rib is a side or flank bone, especially the part taken from Adam in the account of Eve’s creation. The term may also refer figuratively to side beams used in the ark and altar.
Biblical Usage
The word is used in the account of God’s taking a rib from Adam and making a woman. It also describes structural beams of the ark and altar. The “fifth rib” passages in Samuel are better rendered as wounds into the body or abdomen.
